Acne: Causes and Solutions
That scourge of adolescence, acne, hits just about everyone at some time or another. Some people get off lightly, for others it becomes a big problem. There are a number of factors which can contribute to acne which are listed in the guide below along with the best way to treat it.
The main causes of acne
Acne occurs when pores becomes blocked by a oil known as Sebum. Normally, Sebum lubricates skin and hair to optimal levels of that they stay soft and smooth but not greasy or oily, as long as proper hygiene is followed. During the adolescent stage, the body's hormone levels yo-yo and will cause it to over-produce Sebum. The most frequent place acne occurs is in the 'T zone' which is the forehead, nose and chin. This is usually the first and most likely place pimples will pop up.
As soon as the pores become blocked, the Sebum begins to collect behind the blockage. Most commonly called “whiteheads", these are deposits of white liquid just behind the blocked pore. "Blackheads" are a variant of whiteheads, they are simply whiteheads that turn dark after dirt gets into them. A whitehead or blackhead becomes a pimple when bacteria enters into the area and causes infection.
Essential Tips for Acne Care
Giving your face a good scrub a few times a day will not stop acne. In fact, because acne is usually caused by overproduction of Sebum, over-cleansing areas by scrubbing too hard can actually make the problem worse, because you'll stimulate more oil production. The extra oil production, along with the irritation caused by the over-scrubbing, can actually make pimples worse.
Steps you can take to control acne
Washing your face gently twice a day with specialized acne soap will remove cleanse the pores without increasing Sebum levels. DON'T SCRUB. Applying the soap and lightly lathering in circular motions on the affected skin is the ideal way to treat acne.
The next step is to find and apply a skin lotion that contains benzoyl peroxide, which will remove bacteria and reduce oil production. The moisturizer in these lotions will also help with keeping your skin fresh and holding back the acne.
A list of things for acne sufferers to avoid.
Don't use moisturizers unless they are specifically formulated for oily skin or for those with acne.
Using non-acne moisturizers will only case bad reactions with your existing acne. DO apply creams that are specialized for people suffering from acne.
Avoid popping pimples.
I know its difficult sometimes, but when you realize it causes infection to spread and even scarring, you may find it a lot easier to resist the urge.
Don't touch your face unless your hands are clean.
Common sense should rein here as you will have to touch your face during the washing process, but resist the urge during the day when your hands are dirty. Your hands contain more bacteria (and other peoples Sebum) from daily interactions, so transferring this to your face will only make your acne worse.
Avoid wearing tight clothing if possible and be sure that you keep your glasses or sunglasses clean.
Tight clothing (including even such things as headbands or scarves) can cause acne breakouts on the skin. The bridge of your nose is in constant contact with glasses or sunglasses, which is why its important to keep them clean. If you don't do this, you could risk reinfecting yourself with bacteria from previous wearings.
Anyone wearing makeup should clean it off before going to bed.
Make sure you also buy makeup that does not clogged pores and is water-based. This will indicate that it is "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic on the label.
Keep your hair tied back as much as possible.
Having hair touching your face can aggravate and spread acne to more areas of your face.
Lastly, if you are still still having trouble with acne outbreaks, you should book an appointment with a dermatologist. He or she will have treatments and other options available for you if you can't seem to keep it under control with normal methods. Most people however, will be able to control their acne by following the steps listed previously.
