Acid Chemical Peel Kit
Treat Yourself to an At-Home Chemical Peel
You've always wanted to try a chemical peel, but were afraid the treatment was not affordable. You'll be pleased to know that there are now products available for you to give yourself an at-home skin peel. (The two phrases—chemical peel and skin peel—are interchangeable.)
These products contain the same ingredients (salicylic acid, TCA-Trichloroacetic Acid, or Glycolic acid) that professional chemical peels do. The concentration may be slightly lower, but the results can be just as good.
You may be wondering what the differences are between the types of peels. Here is a brief explanation of each kind.
Salicylic peels use Salicylic acid, which is extracted from the bark of the willow tree, and is considered a beta-hydroxy acid. Salicylic acid works on the top layers of the skin to provide a very mild, yet still effective, skin peel.
Glycolic acid, which is derived from sugar cane, is used in glycol peels. This acid, which is considered an alpha-hydroxy acid (in fact, it's the smallest one there is), works as an exfoliate, loosening and removing dead skin cells so that healthier, younger-looking skin is exposed.
Trichloracetic peel solutions use trichloracetic acid (TCA). TCA is an acetic acid in which three atoms found in its methyl group have been replaced with chlorine atoms. In plain English, this simply means that TCA is stronger than salicylic or Glycolic acid. In fact, TCA is comparable in strength to sulfuric acid, but, of course, for skin treatments it has been diluted to a safe level.
TCA is the strongest of any of the acids used in skin peel products. It is usually recommended only for those who have had a previous chemical peel.
Now that you know the difference, and have chosen your product, here are the steps for giving yourself a do it yourself face peel.
- Choose the type of product you want to use. The "Peel RX by NaturalSkinShop.com" brand has different products, each containing a different type of acid. The product will most likely come in a kit which contains the cleansing solution, the chemical peel solution itself, the exfoliating solution, and the moisturizing solution.
- Cleanse your skin using the cleansing product. Each type of skin peel has its own unique skin cleanser, so you don't have to worry about using a cleanser intended for a glycolic peel with a salicylic peel or vice versa.
- Carefully follow the directions for applying the do it yourself face peel.
- Allow the product to remain on the skin for the recommended amount of time. Some burning and stinging is normal (see Warnings for further information.)
- Thoroughly remove the solution by following the directions given for this step in the kit, then apply the moisturizer as directed.
TIPS:
- Remember that your face will look red and may even be slightly swollen for a few days after your do it yourself face peel. So, you may want to plan on doing it when you can remain at home for a few days.
- Read the directions thoroughly before starting the process.
WARNINGS:
- When using the tca peel, remember that even though the concentration has been adjusted for at-home use, you are still dealing with a rather strong acid. Make sure you keep it away from your eyes and mucous membranes.
- While some burning or stinging is normal, and redness will appear, it should not be unbearable. If either sensation becomes too intense, or you notice extreme redness, immediately remove the solution, even if the appropriate amount of time has not elapsed. If the discomfort continues, seek medical attention.
